Jeremy Goodman has been taking a class in local history taught by Margaret, a retired journalist. She's just dug up some intriguing new information in a forty-year-old unsolved triple homicide known as the Golf Course Murders—and now she's been attacked and left for dead. Jeremy is teaming up with an ex-cop classmate to look into Margaret's assault—and their fellow students, as well. Could one of them have a connection to the cold case?

Alyson is jogging along waters edge when the fog rolls in. She can feel someone watching her but no matter how hard she looks her shadow cannot be seen. A regional television programme, Get One Over, where amateurs search for and discover antiques and valuable objects in junk shops, has captured the nation’s zeitgeist and gone nationwide. The Christmas episode is to be filmed in Market Darley, and being antiques fans, Miss Emily Jarvis, and DI Falconer and DS Carmichael plan to be in town to bump into the stars of the programme. Carmichael loves the programme for its jokey narrator, but Falconer, along with a host of other viewers, hates the man’s rude and condescending commentary.

Dr. Kate is once again on the case (not to mention thin ice) after discovering a young engaged couple frozen to death in the lake. To make matters worse, her temporary receptionist appears to have overdosed from a recreational sedative used at the animal hospital.
