Spanien, 1944: Die junge Ofelia reist mit ihrer schwangeren Mutter zu ihrem unbarmherzigen Stiefvater Capitán Vidal in eine verlassene Mühle, die seinen Truppen als Stützpunkt zur Bekämpfung der verbliebenen Rebellen dient.
