Jack es un niño distraído y tiene una madre que pasa el día trabajando en la huerta. Pero Jack encuentra en el bosque a un extraño anciano que le saluda por su nombre, y que le cambia la vaca por cinco habichuelas (alubias) mágicas.

Jack comienza su carrera como cazador de gigantes por pura coincidencia: encuentra en el ayuntamiento de su ciudad un letrero que señala como recompensa por la muerte del temible Cormoran el tesoro entero del gigante. Gracias a su ingenio y valentía logra derrotar a su enemigo y hacerse del tesoro. Su fama se extiende por toda Inglaterra, y varios gigantes acuden a su búsqueda para vengar la muerte de Cormoran, pero Jack siempre logra salir ileso por su gran inteligencia y valor.

Una familia pobre decide vender su última posesión a fin de conseguir unas cuantas monedas con las qué comer: su vaca. Jack, el hijo, se encuentra con un hombre misterioso en el camino hacia el mercado, quien lo convence de intercambiar la vaca por tres habichuelas que, dice, son mágicas. Jack acepta el intercambio y vuelve a su casa, donde su mamá, colérica, lanza las habichuelas por la ventana y regaña a Jack con fuerza. Las habichuelas crecen hasta convertirse en un tallo altìsimo que llega al cielo, donde viven gigantes.
