All great crime writers have their favourite creations. Similarly, every great sleuth has his, or her, own preferred method of deduction. Take the charming Parker Pyne, who relies upon an intuitive knowledge of human nature to solve the 'Problem at Pollensa Bay'. Or Mr Satterthwaite, who seeks inspiration through his collaboration with the enigmatic Mr Quin in 'The Harlequin Tea Set' mystery. Then, of course, there's Poirot, whose measured analysis of motive and opportunity is tested to the full in 'Yellow Iris', when he receives an anonymous call about a matter of life and death.

After a bloody and expensive war, the British Army can’t afford to keep the lake and build a convalescent home on its shores yet they still battle with Walden Council and a railway company for ownership. But an old mansion used as an officer training academy stands where the railway company plans to build a lakeside hotel. It belongs to General Cheverton – and he won’t leave his home.

High Ambo, in England, is the setting. It is winter, and Caroline West - a very human, placid, and unexcitable person - has gone there to escape her late husband's relatives. Like so many good-hearted people, she is immediately put upon. Caroline's sister Iris comes first, full of impulse and determination to be a reporter - an ambition abruptly deflected by a handsome young schoolmaster - an authority on birds. Then comes Robert, with his sweet, ingenuous fiancée Polly, and thus making the three-ring circus of a genuine Cadell household.

Folge 13: Zunächst sieht es so aus, als hätte sich Poe von Leonie getrennt. Aber die Wahrheit ist eine ganz andere und bohrt sich tief in beider Seelen. Und dann taucht der verhüllte Reiter auf, der an Poes und Leonies Feinden grausam Rache nimmt. Nach und nach können Poe und Leonie erste Geheimnisse lüften - der Rest jedoch versinkt in tiefstem Schweigen.

Folge 10: Auf der Suche nach der verschwundenen Leonie Goron Poe kann sich Poe in Dr. Templetons Haus einschmuggeln. Im Haus entdeckt Poe ein seltsames Porträt in einem ovalen Rahmen. Aber das ist nicht alles. Im Keller-Labyrinth findet er Leonie Goron. Und sie ist nicht allein: In ihrer Gesellschaft befinden sich mehrere grauenvoll zugerichtete Leichen.

Folge 16: Poe ist dem Doktor entkommen und nach New York geflohen. Dort mietet er sich in einem alten Hotel im sechsten Bezirk ein. Was er nicht weiß: Im Volksmund heißt die Gegend der "blutige alte Bezirk". Und das Hotel hat seltsame, unterirdische Gänge.
