Art conservator JJ Jego’s hobby is photography. When an incident involving the police unfolds on the pier she starts clicking away. Later she finds she has captured something unusual in the window of an apartment. It looks like a Vincent van Gogh—a print surely, but it's not just any Van Gogh: the original Six Sunflowers was destroyed in 1945. And that's not the only famous painting she glimpses.

It’s early spring 1948 and Lane arrives in New Denver to find that her friend, Peter Barisoff, is not at home. Instead, in a nearby meadow, she encounters Tom, an Indigenous man in search of his ancestral lands. Lane is intrigued. Unfortunately, once Peter returns home, the day takes a gloomy turn when the trio uncovers human remains next to Peter’s garden, and Lane must tell her husband, Inspector Darling, that she’s inadvertently stumbled into his professional domain—again.

However, Chief Patrick believes that there is more to the case than meets the eye. He believes the boy has been framed, contrary to what the folks in town say, except for Katey who is the only one who believes him.

With a host who seems intent on accosting both catering employees and guests alike, things go from bad to worse when he accuses Sal of murdering his long-dead son. As the crescendo of exploding fireworks overhead becomes the backdrop for cupcakes and champagne, a deadly murder occurs. Can Sal and Emory explain why the cupcake the host ate, after shoving a trayful of buttercream-frosted cupcakes onto Sal, resulted in his death? Or will the detective and guests alike believe that Sal is a murderer?

My wife’s killer finally caught, I was content to leave Myerton to serve in the isolation of the same monastery where I found my call to the priesthood. The temptations of the past still occupy my mind, but behind these walls I’m safe from them. A call from the Archbishop sends me back to Saint Clare’s, to find out if a young priest has broken his vows. Confident I’ll find nothing wrong, I’m content to return. Then a young woman is murdered, and the priest stands accused. Helen is on the case, and I must work with her again to find the truth.
