When 79-year-old Arthur gathers his family together to share some important news, no one is prepared for the bombshell he drops: he's gay, and after a lifetime in the closet, he's about to come out. Arthur's daughter, Elizabeth, storms out. She swears that she won't have anything to do with her father again—and she forbids her children from seeing him too. Arthur's 21-year-old grandson, Teddy, has a secret of his own: he's also gay, and developing serious feelings for his colleague Ben. But Teddy doesn't feel remotely ready to come out yet.

The story is about Sue, who started out living in a trailer with her uneducated, teenage parents in the backwoods in the 1960s. Moving out on her own at 15, she made "headline news" with record-breaking car sales in a man's world in the late '70s and '80s. Sue had to hang tough as the jealous men were sure she had slept with her customers to make so many car deals. The office women with college degrees resented giving a high school dropout pay checks exceeding their own.

Twenty-one-year-old narcoleptic Angel Duet knows her father harbors secrets. He loves and protects her, but his suspicious refusal to discuss her mother's death drives Angel to worship an image created from the little history she does have: her father's sketchy stories and her mother's treasured photography, studies of clouds that have hung in the their foyer for more than twenty years. When her father's girlfriend moves in, the photographs come down, and Angel's search for truth becomes an obsession.
