The Decameron is one of the greatest literary works of the Middle Ages. Ten young people have fled the terrible effects of the Black Death in Florence and, in an idyllic setting, tell a series of brilliant stories, by turns humorous, bawdy, tragic and provocative. The most enduring work by the Renaissance humanist Giovanni Boccaccio, The Decameron is a collection of one hundred stories about ten young noblemen and noblewomen who escape the plague by moving to a country villa outside the Italian city of Florence. Highly influential, numerous writers have borrowed from Boccaccio's tales, including Edgar Allen Poe, John Keats, and George Eliot.

Herr Chapelet täuscht einen frommen Pater durch eine falsche Beichte und stirbt. Trotz des schlechten Lebenswandels, den er geführt, kommt er nach seinem Tode in den Ruf der Heiligkeit und wird Sankt Chapelet genannt.

Masetto von Lamporecchio stellt sich stumm und wird Gärtner in einem Nonnenkloster, dessen Bewohnerinnen um die Wette bei ihm schlafen. Gar viele Leute gibt es, schöne Damen, Männer wie Frauen, die so töricht sind, dass sie felsenfest glauben, ein Mädchen, dem man den weißen Schleier übergehangen und die schwarze Kutte angezogen habe, höre auf, ein Weib zu sein, als ob es im Augenblick seiner Einkleidung in einen Stein verwandelt worden wäre.

Bernabo von Genua verliert durch Ambrogiuolos Betrug sein Vermögen und befiehlt, dass seine unschuldige Frau getötet werde. Sie entkommt und dient in Männerkleidern dem Sultan. Dann entdeckt sie den Betrüger und veranlasst Bernabo, nach Alexandrien zu kommen. Der Betrüger wird bestraft, und sie kehrt, wieder im Frauengewand, mit ihrem Manne reich nach Genua zurück.

Man gibt dem Ferondo ein Pulver ein und trägt ihn für tot zu Grabe. Ein Abt, der sich inzwischen mit seiner Frau die Zeit vertreibt, nimmt ihn aus dem Sarge und sperrt ihn in einen Kerker, wo man ihm weiß macht, dass er sich im Fegefeuer befinde. Nach seiner Wiederauferstehung, beschenkt ihn seine Frau durch den Segen des geistlichen Herrn mit einem Sohne, den er ohne Umstände für den seinigen erkennt.
