One cold autumn night, a woman is found hanging from a beam at her holiday cottage. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes findet Halla eine Pistole in einer Garage mitten in Reykjavík. Sie bringt sie zur Polizei. Damals wurde ein Mann namens Garðar aus heiterem Himmel erschossen. Konráð nimmt nun privat Ermittlungen auf, weil er wissen will, was sein Vater mit den Verbrechen zu tun hat.

Ein Toter wird in einem milchig-blauen Wasser einer Lagune nahe Reykjavík entdeckt. Der Mann wurde offenbar ermordet. Kommissar Erlendur nimmt sogleich die Ermittlungen auf. Bei dem Opfer scheint es sich um einen Amerikaner von der benachbarten Militärbasis zu handeln. Dort erhält Erlendur jedoch keinerlei Auskünfte auf seine Fragen. Als eine Isländerin den Toten dann als ihren Bruder, einen Flugzeugmechaniker, identifiziert, erhärtet sich der Verdacht, dass ihm ein Militärgeheimnis zum Verhängnis wurde.

In einer Wohnung in Reykjavík wird die Leiche ein Mannes gefunden - mit durchschnittener Kehle. Täter und Opfer scheinen sich gekannt zu haben...

En pleine Guerre froide, la proximité d'une base américaine ne facilite pas les rapports entre Islandais et Américains. C'est dans ce lagon qu'est découvert le cadavre disloqué d'un homme.
