A man is found murdered in his Reykjavik flat. There are no obvious clues apart from a cryptic note left on the body and a photograph of a young girl's grave. Delving into the dead man's life Detective Erlendur discovers that 40 years ago he was accused of an appalling crime, but never convicted. Had his past come back to haunt him? As Erlendur struggles to build a relationship with his unhappy daughter, his investigation takes him to Iceland's Genetic Research Centre, where he uncovers disturbing secrets that are even darker than the murder of an old man.

One cold autumn night, a woman is found hanging from a beam at her holiday cottage. At first sight, it appears like a straightforward case of suicide; María had never recovered from the death of her mother two years previously and she had a history of depression. But then the friend who found her body approaches Detective Erlendur with a tape of a séance that María attended before her death and his curiosity is aroused. Driven by a need to find answers, Erlendur begins an unofficial investigation into María's death.

Detective Sigurdur Oli is in trouble. He readily agrees, only to arrive to find one of the pair lying in a pool of blood. When the victim dies in hospital, Sigurdur Oli is faced with investigating a murder without revealing his own reasons for being present at the murder scene.

When a travelling salesman is found murdered in a basement flat, killed by a bullet from a Colt .45, the police initially suspect a member of the Allied occupation force. The British are in the process of handing over to the Americans, and the streets are crawling with servicemen whose relations with the local women are a major cause for concern.

Auf seinem Schreibtisch liegen Zeitungsausschnitte aus den Kriegsjahren, die von einem brutalen Mord berichten: Ein Mädchen wurde damals mitten in der Stadt erdrosselt, dort, wo in jener Zeit das Lager des amerikanischen Militärs war. Konráð, ein pensionierter Polizist, erfährt davon, und seine Neugier erwacht. Er hatte schon früher von dem ermordeten Mädchen gehört - aber warum sollte jemand Berichte über ihren Tod so lange Zeit aufbewahren?

Arnaldur Indridason, maître du thriller islandais, nous entraîne cette fois dans une histoire singulière se déroulant au XVIIe siècle en Islande : la rencontre insolite entre le roi du Danemark et un horloger.

Daniel, quadragénaire interné dans un hôpital psychiatrique de Reykjavik, se jette par la fenêtre sous les yeux de son frère Palmi. Au même moment, un vieil enseignant, qui a eu Daniel comme élève dans les années 60, meurt dans l'incendie de sa maison. L'enquête est menée parallèlement par le frère de Daniel, libraire d'occasion, un tendre rongé par la culpabilité, et par une équipe de policiers parmi lesquels apparaît un certain Erlendur, aux côtés du premier de la classe Sigurdur Oli et d'Elinborg.

Un vieil homme solitaire est retrouvé mort dans son lit. Il semble avoir été étouffé sous son oreiller. Dans ses tiroirs, des coupures de presse sur la découverte du corps d'une jeune couturière dans le passage des Ombres en 1944, pendant l'occupation américaine. Pourquoi cet ancien crime refait-il surface après tout ce temps ? La police a-t-elle arrêté un innocent ? Soixante ans plus tard, l'exinspecteur Konrad décide de mener une double enquête.

1945. Un bombardier allemand s'écrase sur le Vatnajökull, le plus grand glacier d'Europe, qui l'engloutit. Parmi les survivants, étrangement, des officiers allemands et américains. Vont-ils mourir gelés, emportant un des plus lourds secrets du XXe siècle ? 1999. Le glacier fond et les forces spéciales de l'armée américaine envahissent immédiatement le Vatnajökull et tentent en secret de dégager l'avion. Deux jeunes randonneurs surprennent ces manœuvres et sont rapidement réduits au silence.

Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes findet Halla eine Pistole in einer Garage mitten in Reykjavík. Sie bringt sie zur Polizei. Als der pensionierte Kommissar Konráð davon erfährt, erinnert er sich, dass sein Vater eine ebensolche Waffe besaß. Ein Mitarbeiter der Spurensicherung findet zudem heraus, dass aus dieser Waffe der tödliche Schuss in einem anderen ungeklärten Fall stammt. Damals wurde ein Mann namens Garðar aus heiterem Himmel erschossen. Konráð nimmt nun privat Ermittlungen auf, weil er wissen will, was sein Vater mit den Verbrechen zu tun hat.

Genåbningen af en gammel forsvindingssag frembringer mange dybe følelser hos den pensionerede politimand Konrad, da han bliver involveret i den igen. En gruppe tyske turister på vandretur ved gletsjeren Langjøkul i Island støder pludselig på det velbevarede lig af Sigurvin, en ung mand, der forsvandt i området tredive år tidligere. Dengang gav politiets efterforskning intet svar på den mystiske forsvinding. Nu bliver Konrad, der arbejdede på sagen dengang, ringet op af patologen og opfordret til at tage et kig på liget. Et stort sår i baghovedet tyder på at Sigurvin er blevet myrdet.

Als eine Isländerin den Toten dann als ihren Bruder, einen Flugzeugmechaniker, identifiziert, erhärtet sich der Verdacht, dass ihm ein Militärgeheimnis zum Verhängnis wurde.

In einer Wohnung in Reykjavík wird die Leiche ein Mannes gefunden - mit durchschnittener Kehle. Täter und Opfer scheinen sich gekannt zu haben...
