The Glasgow Orchestra are rehearsing to perform, but little do they know of the sequence of events happening backstage. When George Millar, the orchestra's leader, is brutally murdered in his dressing room, his colleagues are shocked. But the show must go on. Enter DCI Lorimer and psychologist Solomon Brightman to investigate. What they uncover is a series of irrevocably tangled relationships between the orchestra members.

The body of a prostitute is found at Glasgow's Queen Street Station, her hands, pointing towards her feet, placed as if in prayer, a small flower pressed between the palms. Psychologist Solomon Brightman is called to assist DCI Lorimer in the murder hunt, with the hope that his lateral thinking will shine a light on the case from a different angle. But before any conclusions can be drawn, the body of a nurse is discovered at The Grange, a private clinic.

Like his actor namesake, Ronald Coleman is a suave, well-spoken English gentleman. But although he's a movie buff, Coleman is no film star - he's a copper, and a Detective Inspector to boot. Together with his down-to-earth Scottish partner, DS Fred Astor, he sets about solving cases on two very different patches - rural Kirkcaldy and inner-city Southampton.

When Private Enquiry Agent Oz Blackstone opens the door of the flat in Ebeneezer Street, the sight that greets him isn't quite what he's looking for. But when a homeless man is brought in for questioning, the investigation takes a bizarre turn.

An undercover stint as a TV wrestling master of ceremonies has convinced him that he may have hidden theatrical talent - and now he's got a taste for the spotlight. So, the chance of a bit part in a movie seems like an offer he can't refuse - even though his own life is fast developing a dramatic storyline of its own.

On the other hand, a brief encounter with the beautiful, self-possessed Susie Gantry is turning into something more long term. Life looks like a bowl of cherries until ex-lover Alison Goodchild turns up asking for a favor.

For Oz Blackstone and Primavera Philips, the idea to forget their troubled past by returning to L'Escala, the idyllic Spanish village where they were once so happy, is not working out. A body turns up in the swimming pool of their new villa, and they are suddenly very much back in harness again.

It's summertime in Monaco and Oz Blackstone, now an international film star, is sitting on the verandah of his opulent mansion gazing idly at luxury yachts in the harbour.
