Oliver Twist is the well-loved tale of an orphan, who starts life in a workhouse and finds himself embroiled in London's criminal underworld, before being saved by a kind gentleman who knows something of his surprising family history. A satire and social commentary as well as a page-turning yarn, full of grit, wit, and some of the most memorable characters in English Literature. The second published serialised novel by Charles Dickens, The British Library remarks that "it has proven to be one of the best-loved novels in the history of literature".

Les penúries econòmiques de Dickens van inspirar les seves millors novel·les (Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Temps difícils), de gran contingut i crítica social. Gràcies a una herència, Charles deixa la fàbrica on treballava i es posa a estudiar. Aprèn taquigrafia i amb 17 anys escriu als diaris. El 1836 escriu per a un editor una novel·la per fascicles setmanals, Oliver Twist, on mostra amb cruesa la difícil vida dels més pobres. Va tenir un enorme èxit.

Dans l'Angleterre victorienne, Oliver Twist, jeune orphelin angélique, est recueilli par l'assistance ; il est placé chez M. et Mme Sowerberry, fabricant de cercueils et croque-mort de son état. Là, il ne connaît que privations et mauvais traitements. Oliver endure tout, jusqu'au jour où une provocation d'un apprenti le pousse à se battre puis à s'enfuir vers Londres.
