Why is Texas hiring teachers who are not certified?

  • Summary

  • Texas needed to hire a whole lot of teachers for this school year, and it turns out schools hired a lot of teachers that don't have their teaching certificates.

New data from the Texas Education Agency find more than a third of those new hires aren't certified.

The biggest offenders seem to be charter school districts, where they have almost 60 percent of their teachers without certifications.

Overall, this report finds half of Texas teachers today aren't certified and don't have classroom experience.
