Who Am I Now with Devavani

  • Summary

  • Being raised in the Church of the Science of Mind, Devavani  had a wonderful foundation of spirituality from a young age. Changing their name to Center for Spiritual Living and based on the writings of Earnest Holmes who had studied the many religions of the world, Holmes found the common thread that "as a man thinketh, so is his life."  As a working mother going to school at night, Devavani recommitted to her church and eventually became the Music Director at a prominent church in San Diego and so began her music ministry for the next 17 years. In the 60's Devavani had a teenage pregnancy and got thrown into adulthood, got married and stayed married for many years. Listen to her journey of re-awakening in the third, 3rd of her life.

Devavani is a gifted singer, recording artist, composer, poet and teacher.  Mother and grandmother of two beautiful daughters and three grandbabies, she has shapeshifted her life for nearly seven decades around the needs of family, her passion for teaching, and her present soul-work of listening to the voice of her muse. If you asked, she would say her greatest talent has been  taking leaps in life, finetuning the art of courageous change.

After decades of raising family, teaching and performing in San Diego, she now spends her days quietly writing, singing and gardening on the tiny island of Guam with her little dog Scout and her loving wife Donna.

    ON LEAVING by DevaVani
I left the horse life, the church life, the teaching life, the married life.
Left home, left my town, my country, community and friends.
    Pulled up roots gently.
Walked away from the familiar, the beloved, the history of my past.
From childhood haunts. From place, people, things. From trainings and degrees, performance stages, classrooms, and houses.
Freed myself from expectation and predictability, watched layers of conditioning and tradition melt.
Dropped the burden of my responsibility to others to answer the whispered sighs of my own heart asking,
    “If not now, then when?”

Answered with gratitude and goodbyes. Farewell desert mountains, and soft California beaches.
    Farewell tribe…until we meet again.
Nothing is wrong. I love you.
Gazing ahead into the unseen Unknown, I felt her breathing. Closed my eyes and felt the Stillness beckoning.
Listened to the hush of waves moving and gates swinging open.
Followed that secret sound until Time chose my moment…
    And I leapt.

“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and  as there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.  If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how it compares with another's expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to stay open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.

No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive...”
    -  Martha Graham
