• THE FRIDAY FIVE: System of a Down (with empire)
    Nov 1 2024

    Send us a text

This week: Flooding in Spain, the appeal of easily digestible feminist moments, All Eyes On Sudan, tax breaks for billionaires and a new moon in Scorpio.

For the week ending November 3, 2024….this is the Friday Five with Clementine Ford.

    ***

Let’s face it, we don’t always pay attention to the news. But just in case it comes up at pub trivia or knock off drinks with our friends, we still want to know what’s going on. Clementine's Friday Five provide's a quick cheat sheet of five of the week’s biggest news items, political gaffes or pop culture tidbits so YOU can bluff your way through whatever comes up.

It's smart, irreverent, quickfire and to the point - just like that friend who everyone always says should have gone into politics, if only she didn’t hate authority figures and rules.

    Dear Clementine

I’m writing to ask for advice on how to help a friend who has fallen into a rabbit hole with the wellness industry and people claiming to be channels for medical advice. Over the past four years, my friend has become further convinced of the medically unsound things propagated by this community, and it has impacted her life in serious ways - not least of which is following what I consider to be an extreme diet in order to treat a pre existing issue. Whenever I try to speak with her about it, she tells me I don’t understand. I can feel our friendship fracturing almost beyond repair and I’m ashamed to say I’ve withdrawn from her as a result. How can I help her, or is it too late?”

  • DEAR CLEMENTINE: Tween girls, sexualisation and empowerment
    Oct 21 2024

    Send us a text

    “Dear Clementine,

I would love some advice on how to support the tween girls in my life to be safe in a society that sexualises girls, without prematurely terrifying them. Although I have mostly aged out of men's attention (truly the dream), my life is full of girls entering adolescence, and I remember so clearly how early attention from random men started, especially when we were taking public transport in our school uniform, or starting work in service jobs like supermarkets or fast food restaurants.

How can I help prepare these young women for the inevitable attention they will soon start getting from unwelcome men in a way that is empowering and doesn't force them to 'grow up too fast' (as though girls are ever afforded the privilege of remaining innocent and protected)?

    Long time listener, XXXXXXX”

    ***

Empowering young girls in a misogynistic world is no small feat, but it's crucial for their well-being and future. This episode offers insights into the societal pressures that demand young women conform to impossible and contradictory standards. I discuss the premature sexualization of tween girls and the societal paradox that expects them to be passive in their objectification. By teaching girls to assert their boundaries and recognise their intrinsic worth, we can prepare them to navigate these challenges with resilience and confidence, while understanding how rigged the system is from the outset.

You’ll want to listen to this one with all the young women and teen girls in your life!

  • MARIEKE HARDY – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Growing Up
    Oct 15 2024

    Send us a text

Marieke Hardy is a stalwart of the Australian creative scene, with a career in writing, performance and art spanning decades. As presenter of the podcast Marieke Hardy Is Going To Die, Marieke is fascinated by rituals of loss, longing and saying goodbye. In this intimate and beautiful conversation, Marieke and I explore the good, the bad and the ugly of growing up. We discuss our mutual (if independent) choice to estrange ourselves from a parent, the role of trauma in these decisions and what it means to form a ‘chosen family’. From learning how to apologise to learning how to assert boundaries, this is a wonderful opportunity to eavesdrop as two women with a friendship spanning almost twenty years discuss the things we’ve learned and what we would say to our younger selves.

  • Dear Clementine: "I'm worried I might be a creep"
    Oct 14 2024

    Send us a text

    "Dear Clementine,

I’m cis male and have been second guessing my interactions with others. I notice I find it easier to socialise with women, and while I have some strong and satisfying male friendships, the vast majority of my new friendships are with women. Throughout my PhD I’ve also had the opportunity to start managing volunteers, and similarly find it easier working with women. To sum it up I’d say I’m just more interested in spending time with women. I’m really worried these might be warning signs that I’m becoming a creep. Or is it simply that women ARE easier to get along with? While I obviously find other women attractive, I am very content in my current long term, monogamous, heterosexual relationship.

Your advice will be much appreciated!"

Can men and women truly be friends without societal judgments getting in the way? Today I'm challenging long-held perceptions and stereotypes surrounding cross-gender friendships and highlighting the constraints of traditional gender roles that have historically boxed men into roles of protectors and women as emotional caregivers. Drawing insights from feminist philosopher Marilyn Frye, we unpack how patriarchal dynamics shape male friendships and often prioritize male approval over genuine connections with women.

This episode invites listeners to rethink the outdated norms of masculinity and recognize the profound value in forming authentic, respectful relationships with women. What are the implications for both men and women's interpersonal connections when stereotypes about WHY we form friendships with each persist? This is a call to approach all relationships with empathy and understanding, challenging the patriarchal structures that limit our perceptions. Listen in as I advocate for a more humanized view, encouraging men to appreciate these relationships not only for personal growth but as a larger responsibility to dismantle the harmful norms of patriarchy.
