Those Who Were Harmed

By: Richard Witting and Jules Lees
  • Summary

  • This project seeks to tell the stories of underrepresented Vermonters who were made invisible during the eugenics era. Our research focuses on the people targeted by Vermont’s 1931 sterilization law which promoted an inaccurate and discriminatory pseudoscience. Each episode will focus on the life of one individual, aiming to reconsider them as more than simply a victim in the history of eugenics. Our hope is to connect the past to the present by considering how these themes are still at play today.
