The inaugural years of Indigenous football

  • Summary

  • The Yokayi Footy podcast, hosted by Andy Krakouer and Gilbert McAdam, is a six-part series that shares the stories of Indigenous footballers from the first to the many.

In Episode 1, we take a look at the story of Joe Johnson, the very first Indigenous player in the VFL and a premiership winner with Fitzroy in 1904 and 1905. Johnson paved the way for the likes of Alf Egan, Cyril Mann, Sir Doug Nicholls and other Indigenous greats that featured in the inaugural years of top-level football.
