    “Trick or treat,” the girl giggled, holding out a pillowcase full of sweets. They all looked at me the way a toddler looks at a monkey at the zoo. Something about them felt off, and I wanted nothing more in that moment than to slam the door shut and forget all about the holiday. Instead, like the moron I am, I grabbed a few Milky Way chocolate bars from the bucket next to the door and dropped them into the pillow case. The girl’s eyes lingered on my engagement ring, which usually made me happy. I’d talk people’s ears off about the way I proposed to my fiancée, the way we met and just how idyllic our life was. This girl didn’t look at it with curiosity, however. Her eyes gleamed like those of a predator who’d just seen its dinner and found it to be delectable.
    “You married, mister?” she asked with a wry smirk on her face.

    Loners go missing. Drunks stumble into culverts. A lot of explanations work even when they shouldn’t. I didn’t think about it more than you would, except at a truck stop outside of Huntington where an old guy with a hard hat and a ring of nicotine on his first two fingers saw me replacing a reflector battery and struck up a conversation.

    He took a step, and his legs faltered. I needed to support his weight and started to get him to the empty bedroom upstairs to rest. The questions could wait until he sat down. I helped him on the side of the bed, looking him over more. The first few buttons of his shirt were undone, showing he wore a few necklaces, which I thought was odd. He never would have worn jewelry before. He also pierced his ears. Two black simple studs were on each side. I shook my head, even more confused by all of this. How did he change so much? It wasn’t just his appearance. He was far calmer than before. I loved my brother, but he got annoyed really easily.
    “I'm sorry.” He said again with his hands held tightly in front of him, clearly guilty over leaving for so many years.

It was a popular seasonal attraction, a family-owned vegetable farm about a half hour’s drive from the suburbs where I grew up in Missouri. Many locals remember it fondly, but I recently learned that I am the reason it was shut down for good.
