The Tallgrass Podcast

  • Summary

  • The Tallgrass Podcast is bringing you stories from fly-over country, about its land and its people. Flyover Country is rich, diverse, and a damn good time. We celebrate friendliness, looking out for your neighbor, hard-work, and restoring our land. Join me, your host, Michael Weidemann as I sit down with ranchers, farmers, artist, guides, and more as we dive into the complex stories that shape our area. When I started making candles two years ago, I always started each new fragrance with imaging a story. Inspired by my memories of growing up in Oklahoma, I wanted to bring those highlights of my life back with fragrances that reminded me of picking peaches in the summertime and fishing with my friends in the fall. That same emphasis on reliving what’s great about the place I call home is the same drive that led me to start this podcast. I look forward to highlight what makes me proud to be an Okie and learn more myself about this great state I call home.

  • Episode Four: Nick Wetta - West Major
    Aug 11 2022

This week we have Nick Wetta, founder of @westmajor on the podcast. For the last few years Nick has been tackling a problem he found while trying to shop for clothes - not that many Western shirts were being made here in the United States. Launching West Major, Nick took his influences and passion for music, business, and storytelling to put a new spin on an American classic.

It was great getting to talk with Nick about the challenges of launching a business, especially in a market that makes production overseas so easy and against large players in the Western apparel market. Nick has a lot of great insights and lessons, but most of all has a contagious passion for building something around his home in Arizona. Be sure to visit West Major at https://westmajor.com/

  • Episode Three: Clay Forst - Stuart Ranch Outfitters
    Jul 19 2022

I'm so excited to have Clay Forst on this week's episode of the Tallgrass Podcast. Clay (@claysforst) is a sixth generation rancher at Oklahoma's Centennial Ranch: Stuart Ranch. Clay also heads up the ranch's outfitting services with Stuart Ranch Outfitters. Spending every day working on the land either with the cattle or guiding hunts, his photography shows a powerful connection with this lifestyle that few outside of growing up surrounded by it can truly capture.

In this episode I got to ask Clay about what it's like growing up on a 46,000 acre ranch, how the three divisions of Stuart Ranch work alongside each other in utilizing their property, what challenges a ranch of that size faces today, and how Clay has learned to work with the land to encourage more natural habitat for game while continuing to create opportunities for grazing with his cattle.

Be sure to check out Clay's photography at https://www.claysforst.com/

  • Episode Two: Logan Rust - Roam Outdoors
    Jul 12 2022

This week we have Logan Rust with Roam Outdoors (@roamoutdoorsus) in the studio to talk about his work connecting hunters and outdoor recreations with the land through leases with farmers and ranchers across our state. A particularly challenging opportunity for Logan, but it turns out this unique approach is becoming more and more needed as outside visitors drive the rates up on hunting leases around Oklahoma.

In this episode we dive into everything from the the unique balance between hunting on private and public land, how both have to exist symbolically, and how important it is to build trust with people by meeting where they're at.
