RIP SID “Vicious” to “Sycho”, “Justice” to rivals Ruler of the world, master of the powerbomb 6’9” - skyscraper in 8-9, fly Gave Hogan hell from the start Beat the Heartbreak Kid and the Hitman Hart 2-time Federation Champ Plus he stamped Attitude on the Era before the marketing plan 1-time for the big man Wrestling fans, my name is AO Baker. Welcome to The Signature Move. Unfortunately, this week’s episode finds us mourning the loss of the man known as Sid Vicious and Sid Justice. Perhaps best known as Sycho Sid. 2-time WWF Champion. 2-time WCW Champion. Member of the 4 Horsemen. Speaking of the Horsemen, quite possibly the reason that Arn Anderson carries that dot dot dot Kayfabe, brother. I was introduced to Sid back in 1992. Probably at a Blockbuster Video. WrestleMania 8 VHS on the shelf. One-half of a double main event saw the Macho Man Randy Savage challenge the Nature Boy Ric Flair for the world title. The other half saw a 6 foot 9, 300+ pound menace present a very serious threat to Hulkamania. Kicked out of the leg drop and only lost by DQ because of Harvey Whippleman’s interference. The next time I saw Sid was 3 years later. 1995. The bodyguard of Shawn Michaels. Sid’s unsuccessful interference cost Shawn his WrestleMania 11 world title match against Diesel. Obviously Sid’s a much better wrestler than bodyguard but nonetheless, on Raw the next night, Sid reacted to Shawn’s “orders” by lifting HBK over his head and driving him to the mat on 3 separate occasions. Took him out. And that’s why this episode’s signature move is the powerbomb. Quick fact: that move was invented by Lou Thesz in a match against Antonio Rocca. Thesz attempted a piledriver. Rocca fought it. So Thesz lifted him above his head and then, back-first to the mat. As for Sid’s powerbomb. There’s the World Championship Wrestling version where he would drop to both knees at the same time he’d drop his opponent. And of course, The Federation version. 3 of those powerbombs to HBK caused Diesel to make the save, reuniting 2 former friends turned bitter enemies. 1 powerbomb to HBK earned Sid his 1st world title and a powerbomb to Bret earned him his 2nd. Of course Sid had other moves in his arsenal like the chokeslam and the big boot. And that weird angle semi-roundhouse right punch. But the powerbomb put fear in the hearts of many in the World Wrestling Federation. That move, along with the maniacal laugh, wide and wild eyes and a voice that could go from a whisper to a roar several times within the same sentence made Sid one of the most memorable big men ever. So here’s to Sid. Master of the powerbomb. Ruler of the world. Heavyweight champion. Legend. And Signature Mover. + Connect with me: https://madebyaobaker.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamaobaker IG: https://www.instagram.com/iamaobaker/ X: https://x.com/iamaobaker
