  • Civil Experience with Rohan Singh Wilkho - An Indian Perspective
    May 4 2023

Rohan is a graduate student at Texas A&M University, pursuing a doctorate in Civil Engineering, a master's in Computer Science, and a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Sciences (GIS). His research involves leveraging Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Geospatial Analysis for advancing Disaster Informatics, focusing specifically on Flash Flooding.
In his term as a graduate student so far, he has developed an Information Retrieval system (Internet search engine) for past flash flood events in the US. He has also developed a GIS tool for assessing flash flood susceptibility at the community level. He is currently working on developing a micro-database for past flash flood events using multi-label text classification and custom-Named Entity Recognition. He believes his research would provide more resources and tools to emergency planners and decision-makers to better mitigate the flash flood risk and make communities more resilient.
He is also actively involved in student organizations that advocate for students' voices, doing his bit to make the often neglected voice of graduate students heard. He currently serves as the Speaker/Executive Vice President of the Texas A&M Graduate and Professional Student Government and also as the president of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Association. In these organizations, he conducts senate meetings and is currently working on improving the mental health of graduate students in his university, making his organizations more credible, and ensuring that when the administration decides on issues affecting graduate students, they involve graduate students.
