    Brandon Teena’s story was adapted into the 1999 film Boys Don't Cry, directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena and Chloe Sevigny as his girlfriend Lana Tisdale. Both actresses were nominated for Academy Awards and Swank won for best actress. The film was widely praised for its portrayal of Brandon’s life, struggles, and tragic death. It also brought attention to the issues of transgender rights, the violence that transgender individuals face, and the emotional toll of living as a transgender person in a hostile society.
