Tate Brombal Interview - Green Lantern Dark & Batgirl

  • Summary

  • Eisner Award nominated comics writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien: Red Planet) returns to the show today to chat with me about his new DC Comics Elseworlds seven issue mini-series Green Lantern Dark. Last June Tate was a guest during our Pride Month coverage where he introduced the world to the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos which he is co-writing with James Tynion, a LGBTQ+ horror-hero coming-of-age series reintroducing us to the classic Universal Monsters creatures through a distinctly queer lens, now on its twelfth issue. We get into his own introduction to the Elseworlds Imprint through his uncle, how new Lantern Rina Mori was developed as a character, and how a chance dinner conversation created the unlikely creative partnership with artist Werther Dell'Edera. It's also been announced that he's taking on the role of writing the new Batgirl series resurrecting Cassandra Cain for her first ongoing solo series in decades with veteran artist Takeshi Miyazawa. I get to hear all about Tate's research for the book that involves watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and other martial arts movies to refresh his skills on scripting fight scenes and how the nucleus of the book will be focused on the relationship between Cassandra and Lady Shiva. At the end, Tate clues me in to one of the best deep dive book options for writer Mary Shelley research and we catch up on where things are with the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe! Batgirl from the publisher Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because on November 6, Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades, courtesy of writer Tate Brombal (Green Lantern Dark, House of Slaughter) and artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel, Mech Cadet Yu). When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra Cain, Lady Shiva must come to the rescue, and they’re forced to put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Batgirl must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice…and revenge?! This is a Batgirl unlike any other so don’t miss the opportunity to dive into the psyche of one of Gotham City’s deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother.
