THE EMPATHS IN RETROGRADECAST

  • Summary

  • "Empath" isn't an official psychological term, but it's generally defined as a person who is highly attuned to the emotions of others. Empathy is an essential skill for all kinds of relationships. But people with very high levels of it may have a hard time setting boundaries between themselves and others.
    ret·ro·grade/ˈretrəˌɡrād/adjective

    1. directed or moving backward."a retrograde flow
    1. a degenerate person.

Desperate to start a revolution that would destroy the music scene (after getting his heart broken by a recording engineer), singer/songwriter/open mic king, Snarky Remarkable (The Full Benefits) embarked on a journey to the Himalayan mountains where he found The Ampersand, who quickly tempered his expectations. Fully surrendering to their insignificance, they filled out their band with guitarist Ryan Whiskey (The Meatstix, The Milt Homely Experience), bassist William Mayer (Nagi) and keyboardist Jordan. Jordan turned out to be a jerk-faced jerk who left the band and was replaced by synth wizard Kola Kola Pop (who has since abandoned them as well).

They perform an intense brand of roots/rock/soul/psychedelia built around catchy, lyrically dense, emotional explorations of heartbreak, grief, boredom and mental illness with a touch of levity and humour. Their performances at The Park Alleys and The Osborne Taphouse presented a band hellbent on creating a connected and transcendent live musical experience that stays with those who experience it.

Their debut single “She Comes to the City” is available wherever music is listened to, as well their follow up smash “Drugs are Fun”.
