Sin embargo, tan solo dos años más tarde se inició una disputa interna entre el presidente Kiir y el vicepresidente Machar, que acabó evolucionando hasta la guerra civil de nuestros días. Mientras la élite política está en guerra, la población civil es la verdadera víctima: el 90% de la población sobrevive con 1 dólar al día, el 33 % sufre de hambruna y la guerra acumula 400.000 muertes.
