• How will the Greens develop now?
    Jun 11 2026

This podcast is a discussion with Hannah Sell, the General Secretary of the Socialist Party, about the Green Party of England and Wales

The May 2026 elections were a turning point in Britain. The votes of both Labour and the Tory party collapsed; ending the duopoly via which capitalism has ruled for the best part of a century. The right-wing populists of Reform surged, and so did the Greens. Under their new ‘eco-populist’ leader, Zack Polanski, the Greens won an average of 17% of the vote across English local authorities, resulting in 441 extra councillors and winning control of five new councils. In these elections, the Greens were the main left alternative to the establishment parties and to Reform. Meanwhile, Green Party membership has soared to 230,000.

What was the significance of the May local elections for the Greens? Are the Greens a workers' party? What is the Greens' record in power? Are the Greens on the way to being a socialist party? Let's go to Hannah to find out.

  • May elections: Capitalist politics in crisis, time for a workers’ party
    May 21 2026

    https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/

This podcast is a discussion with Hannah Sell, the General Secretary of the Socialist Party, about the local elections that took place on 7th May.

2026 will be remembered as the year that Britain’s existing political order finally fell apart. The two main parties, Labour and the Tories, that have governed Britain in the interests of the capitalist elite for the best part of a century, and presided over endless attacks on the living and working conditions of the working-class, were mercilessly beaten by voters. These elections generated several important questions,

How can we fight back against the gains of Reform? Should the trade unions just back the Greens? Why hasn’t a new workers' party already been launched? Listen to the podcast to find out more!

  • Unite Executive Council elections
    Mar 23 2026

www.socialistparty.org.uk This podcast is a discussion with Rob Williams, the industrial organiser of the Socialist Party, about the upcoming UNITE the union executive council elections.Unite’s elections take place as the pro-capitalist character of Keir Starmer’s Labour government becomes ever clearer, with the working class still paying the price for the crisis in the bosses’ system. The elections from 23 March to 27 April are for the Executive Council (EC), the lay-member leadership of the union.Later this year there will be the election for general secretary. Where Sharon Graham is standing for re-electionSocialist Party members are standing on the left ‘Workers Unite/Back to the Workplace’ slate that supports the manifesto on which Sharon was elected in 2021. The slate includes fellow supporters of the Unite Broad Left, a new broad left group in Unite. We supported Sharon in the 2021 general secretary election because her programme best ensured that Unite would maintain itself as a militant industrial union. This has been borne out by events. Sharon was previously Unite’s head of organising, effectively the lead officer for the union’s industrial action strategy. As general secretary, this has been taken to an even greater level, on a systematic scale. Since she became general secretary, Unite has called over 1,500 disputes, winning 83%. Those disputes have won £605 million for members. ‘The main opposition is grouped around the United Left (UL). It is clear that it is in political retreat, tying itself to Starmer’s Labour and its cutting Labour councillors. What else is at stake in these crucial elections? • How do we fight against racism and the far right? Socialism the Podcast episode 148
    Dec 17 2025

Paula Mitchell from the Socialist Party Executive committee explains the Socialist Parties approach to fighting racism and the far right.

The need to combat racism and the far right is urgent. Although recent polls have shown a small dip, Nigel Farage’s racist right-populist Reform UK is at around 25%. In the summer, over 100,000 people marched with far-right activist Tommy Robinson on a ‘Unite the Kingdom’ demonstration. Protests have taken place at asylum hotels around the country. There is a widespread fear among Black, Asian and migrant communities, and among many workers and activists, at the likelihood of gains for Reform in the May elections and the possibility of a future Farage-led government. What methods and tactics are needed to fight racism and the far-right?

  • Corbyn, Sultana, Your Party and the Struggle for Working Class Political Representation in Britain
    Dec 9 2025
Hannah Sell, member of the CWI International Secretariat and General Secretary of the Socialist Party (CWI England & Wales), discusses the Your Party founding conference and the struggle for a new mass workers’ party in Britain, with Sean Figg, from the CWI’s International Secretariat. Your Party’s founding conference has taken place. Unfortunately, on its formal creation, at this stage of the developing process, Your Party falls short of being the new mass workers’ party with a socialist programme that is needed. However, despite this, and despite the attempts of the capitalist media to cast the event in the worst possible light, many of those leaving Your Party’s founding conference in Liverpool on 30 November will do so feeling more positive than they will have done on arrival.

  • Taming the beast or changing the system? Review of "Capitalism and its Critics"
    Nov 21 2025
There is growing and widespread dissatisfaction with capitalism worldwide. Economic models that dominated the post-Word War Two decades — Keynesian social democracy and later neoliberal globalization — are seen as having run aground. The system today is failing to meet the basic needs of working class people. This crisis has fuelled both right and left populist movements. Economic nationalism, authoritarianism and inequality are resurgent. It is with this background that John Cassidy explores, in a timely fashion, the critics of capitalism and the alternatives they advocate in Capitalism and its Critics – A Battle of Ideas In The Modern World. TU Senan and Niall Mulholland discuss Cassidy’s book and where his analysis differs from that of the CWI.

  • The World Impact of Two Years of War on Gaza – and what lies ahead?
    Nov 4 2025
More analysis at https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/ A month after the second anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel and the subsequent prolonged genocidal slaughter in Gaza, the fate of Trump’s latest proposals for an end to the war is still in the balance. The US plans to impose a transitional government of technocrats on the Palestinians in Gaza, backed up by outside armed forces – a form of naked colonialism. Israeli military forces will be allowed to remain inside the perimeter of the Gaza strip, maintaining control of its borders – a continued blockade, imprisoning the Palestinians and deciding what goods can enter and leave the strip. Israeli prime minister Netanyahu has made clear that Israel has no intention of entirely withdrawing from Gaza and stressed that there will be no possibility of a Palestinian state. Today, with nationality-based distrust and division dominating the Israel-Palestine landscape, a solution can seem further away than ever. On a capitalist basis, it’s not just further away, but impossible. However, consciousness of workers and the poor in Israel and among Palestinians will not be disconnected from developments in other parts of the world, a world in which young people are increasingly questioning whether capitalist crisis is their only future.
