Scene 32 - Lucas Stibbard

  • Summary

  • With over 20+ years in practice, Lucas Stibbard has finally joined us in the studio to dispel the many myths surrounding the arts industry, and teach us how to perfect the work/life balance when you're an artist. As part of The Escapists (a multi-disciplinary collective he co-founded), Lucas has dabbled in everything - from dramaturgy to directing, acting to producing. Having performed nationally and internationally, he is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the arts, and this is a masterclass interview in storytelling and theatre-making.

Scene 32 unravels Lucas' endeavours as a multi-disciplinary artist, working with young people and the success of his critically acclaimed, multi-award-winning 'boy girl wall'. We chat about taking this production to America and the educational discussions and differences when it came to the text, as well as the importance of drama as an educational tool. We also take a look at Lucas' new work, '000 Things I Need To Tell You', which centres around raising a boy and deconstructing masculinity. Lucas also shares his experiences working with shake&stir on 'A Christmas Carol', his love of Brecht and post-dramatic theatre, and the importance of having other hobbies as an artist. This interview navigates the highs and lows of being a full-time artist, and how we can all keep theatre alive.
