In seiner Forschung beschäftigt er sich mit den Fragen des Alterns in der Gesellschaft. Seit einem Vierteljahrhundert liegen seine Schwerpunkte auch auf der Hospizbewegung, auf Demenz und Palliative Care. Gronemeyer ist Autor zahlreicher Sachbücher.
