Hopewell Valley Student Podcasting NetworkProcessing the Past 1940’s*introduction/recap* Hey guys, it's your host Isabella BACK with another episode for you. Again a quick recap we talked about the 1930s last episode where we talked about artist Georgia O'keefe More about Jazz and Swing along with fashion trends during that time.
Segment 1: Music- (still in spooky season) Getting right into it. During this time a tune still popular today, a Christmas song that goes way back, by Bing Crosby, featured in a classic christmas movie Home Alone, you might have guessed it but, White Christmas was released in 1942
- Bing was in his 50s when he sang this song but he has a very smooth calming voice I could fall asleep to, his song already gets me stoked for the Holiday season coming up soon,
- This one song sparked many other musicians and singers to do covers of it and even Micheal Buble' sang a cover of this song which gained a lot of popularity as well
- Bing did sing other songs but seemed to mainly gain popularity from his Holiday tunes. Even famous artist David Bowie sang Little Drum Together but this was later in his career.
- Jazz and Swing are still huge but youll see that in the upcoming decades that it will slowly become less popular as other genres arise
Segment 2: Fashion https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/fashion/1940s-fashion-the-decade-captured-in-40-incredible-pictures-108160The 1940s was pretty darn stylish, just like the past decades but as time passes trends come and go and evolve into new fashion styles- Unfortunately, WW2 started in 1939 moving right on into the 40s
- But because of the war some clothing did have a more sophisticated look feeling more serious or even military like it could have been considered
- Kind of like the 20s clothing were more casual and comfortable, but maybe a little more casual than the 20s.
- Shirtwaist Dresses were extremely popular and were buttoned up like a shirt but with a waist length skirt.
- I did say Processing the past would be different than history class but maybe you learned about the Triangle Shirtwaist factory and the fire that occured, where yes, they made shirtwaist dresses.
Segment 3: Art https://www.theartstory.org/definition/american-art/- If youve been listening to my podcast the words Cubism and Surrealism have showed up more than once.. It's only going to get mentioned even more from here considering that those genres of art are still popular and used just as much as the 20s and 30s.
- But Abstract Expressionism was an art movement that was established in the beginnings of 1940s by Jackson Pollock, another artist whose work Ive also attempted to replicate or have been inspired off of in the past.
- Even though it looks like a toddler couldve made those art pieces just by splattering a bunch of different color paints on a Canvas it's more about showing off and expressing emotions and channeling them or displaying them for others to see and interpret, some can even feel the emotions through anothers painting.
- I did not mention it last episode during the 1930s talk but "American Gothic" The painting of the farmers one holding the pitchfork, the artist being Grant Wood who also continued to make art during this era of Abstract Expressionism
