Ondanks zijn inspanningen om het land te stabiliseren, werd hij al snel na de oorlog aan de kant geschoven toen zijn broer, koning Leopold III, terugkeerde. Zijn latere leven was eenzaam en vol frustratie, omdat hij nooit volledig werd gewaardeerd voor zijn inzet, resultaten en opofferingen als tijdelijke vorst.

    Weer erg leerzaam voor moderne leiders.
