Après avoir fait ses classes dans sa commune, il fait ses études secondaires au petit séminaire de Sainte-Anne-d'Auray, puis intègre le grand séminaire de Vannes et Rennes. Il est ordonné prêtre le 20 décembre 1974 à la chapelle Kermaria à Locminé.
