  • Sell Your Movie Honestly with Lance Kramer "The First Step"
    Apr 12 2023

    #vanjones #prisonreform #socialjustice

Lance Kramer's The First Step documentary about CNN's Van Jones and his mission to create a Bi-Partisan Bill for Prison Reform in America. It was a journey to get made as Lance knew the challenge of making a documentary that challenges the ideals of both sides of the political spectrum. Lance talks to me during the Tallgrass Film Festival about his algorithm-breaking film.

In this revealing observational portrait, Black progressive activist and political commentator Van Jones faces a polarized society head on in an effort to reform a broken criminal justice system. Jones, known for calling Donald Trump's election “a whitelash” live on primetime TV, navigates increasingly tense and isolating political and racial divides in his attempt to become a “bridge builder” during the Trump administration.  Condemned by the right for his progressive beliefs, and by the left for embracing conservatives, this fraught and cinematically captured personal journey questions his integrity from all sides, forcing him to consider not only his activism but his own identity.

The First Step takes us behind the scenes of these dramatic power struggles, from internal divisions within both parties, to the lives of activists fighting on the frontlines for their communities.

Women face a lot of challenges and roadblocks when trying to get their films made, but they have just as much right to make art as men. Join the All-New Midnight Movie Club as host Lester Rowe sits with Emily Branham and Alana Waksman to talk about their latest projects  Being Bebe and We Burn Like This respectively and how they are working around the system. They also discuss how their lives have shaped their work from trauma to triumph. Women filmmakers rock! Alana also talked about her film and how this film has become a vehicle for her to explore some of her own personal challenges and ancestral traumas.

We Burn Like This: When 22-year-old Rae, a descendant of Holocaust survivors, is targeted by Neo-Nazis in Billings, Montana, her ancestors' trauma becomes real. As antisemitism rises in the community, Rae journeys to forgive herself, her mother, and the broken world.

    Director: Alana Waksman
