• Episode 148: Strong Dyads, Stronger Practice: How to Lead Together Without Stepping on Toes
    Sep 16 2025

    Send us a text

You've got two leaders at the helm - one knows the medicine, the other knows the business. Sounds like a dream team, right? But what happens when they're not on the same page?

Welcome to Medical Money Matters. Today we're diving into the art and science of clinical-administrative dyads - those essential partnerships that drive medical groups forward. When they work, they create clarity stability, and strength. When they falter, things get messy—fast.

Whether you're a CEO paired with a Chief Medical Officer, a Board President working closely with a Practice Administrator, or you're part of a different leadership pair, this episode is for you. We're going to unpack what makes these partnerships work, what gets in their way, and how to build—or rebuild— a dyad relationship that can truly lead a practice with purpose.

  • Episode 147: So You Want to Start a Practice? Here’s the Playbook You Can’t Skip
    Sep 9 2025

    Send us a text

Picture this: you're finalizing your residency, or you've spent years in practice and you're finally ready to strike out on your own. You have this forward-thinking amazing vision—a practice that reflects how you want to deliver care. A place built for patients, for community, perhaps for innovation. It’s exciting. But here’s the truth: owning your own practice isn’t just about medicine—it’s about running a business. And that means you need a roadmap that’s complete, accurate, and realistic. That means a business plan with a financial pro forma and a timeline you can rely on.

Having that plan isn’t academic. It’s the difference between a dream and an actual launch. With it in hand, finding a banking partner becomes a lot more straightforward. Banks want to see organization, evidence of planning, clarity around costs, revenues, how you get paid, and when you can pay them back. And because starting a medical practice is usually a once‑in‑a‑career experience—or maybe twice at most—working with a seasoned business consultant is essential. This is your big leap—don’t just go it alone.

So, today we’re going to walk through what you absolutely need to build into that startup plan. We’ll talk through how you’ll structure your entity, how you’ll forecast your finances, how contracting, credentialing, HR, and operations all fit together, and why a realistic timeline matters.

To get the free startup checklist mentioned in this episode, please email dave@healtheps.com and he will send it to you.

Join me for a compelling conversation with leadership development expert, Laurie Baedke, FACHE, FACMPE where we unpack what Mentorship, Sponsorship and Coaching can mean to a medical group's bottom line. Laurie draws from her experience as a leadership development program founder, author, and international speaker as she shares with us the reasons why medical groups should double down on developing their teams, and building bench strength.

In a time where margins are being squeezed, regulations are tightening and time is limited, Laurie makes a great case for developing your most precious resource: your people. Laurie can be reached at www.LaurieBaedke.com and on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauriebaedke/

  • Episode 145: Where Does Your Money Hide? Finding Lost Revenue in the Medical Group Revenue Cycle
    Aug 26 2025

    Send us a text

Welcome to the Medical Money Matters Podcast, brought to you by Health e Practices—where we explore smarter ways to manage the business side of medicine, without losing sight of why we’re here: to provide excellent care.

Today’s episode might make you a little uncomfortable—and that’s a good thing. We’re talking about revenue that slips through your fingers every single day. And here’s the truth: if you’re not watching your revenue cycle closely, you’re very likely seeing patients for free and you don’t even know it.

That’s not hyperbole. We’ve seen it over and over again: practices losing thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars annually because of small breakdowns—some of which happen before the patient even walks through the door. Today, we’re going to track down where your money might be hiding, and more importantly, how to keep losing money in the future.

  • Episode 143.5: Finally. The Financial Education Every Doctor Deserves—But Never Got
    Aug 21 2025

    Send us a text

Welcome back to Medical Money Matters. I’m Jill Arena, and I’m so glad you’re here with me for this very special edition of the podcast. Today, I’m beyond excited to introduce something that’s been in the works for over three and a half years—a course that I truly believe can transform the way physicians engage with the business side of medicine.

This is Physician’s Edge: Mastering Business and Finance in Your Medical Practice. It’s an online, on-demand course designed to give you the practical business and financial training that you never received in medical school. And it’s something I created in response to a need I’ve seen over and over again for decades—and more recently, in response to direct requests from many of the graduates of the Physician Leadership Project. They’ve been asking me, “Where can I go to really dig into finance and business at a level that’s relevant to physicians?” And until today, I haven’t had a good answer. But now, I do.

So if you're wondering how this all came to be—why I felt so compelled to put in the time, the resources, and the effort to build something like this—it all goes back to the very first episode of this podcast. In that episode, I shared a hard truth: our medical education system has done an incredible job of training clinicians to be excellent doctors. But it has completely failed to train you for the realities of business. And in today’s healthcare environment, that knowledge is no longer optional. It’s essential.

Medical schools teach you to be the knower of all things. The one with the answers. And that’s exactly what our patients need in the exam room or the OR. But in the world of business, it’s a very different game. Out here, it’s perfectly acceptable—even encouraged—to say, “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” Unfortunately, that kind of curiosity is often stifled in your training. And that stifling can have real consequences when you're running or participating in a multi-million-dollar practice without the background to support it. • Episode 143: The Art of Difficult Conversations: Managing Conflict in Your Practice
    Aug 19 2025

    Send us a text

You walk into the office and feel it right away—something’s off. A nurse is giving the front desk the silent treatment, one of your physician partners is avoiding eye contact, and the clinic administrator looks like they’re about to quit on the spot. And yet… no one says anything. Everyone keeps moving, business as usual.

    Sound familiar?

Welcome back to Medical Money Matters, the podcast where we talk about the business side of medicine—without losing sight of the people who make it work. I’m glad you’re here because today we’re diving into something every practice deals with but few want to talk about: conflict.

More specifically, how to have those tough conversations with staff, partners, and even patients—the ones we dread but desperately need to have.

  • Episode 142: The Impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill on Private Practices
    Aug 12 2025

    Send us a text

Imagine this: It’s July 2026, and your front desk is fielding a wave of calls from patients who've just lost their insurance coverage. Some are angry. Some are confused. And some are simply disappearing from your schedule altogether. At the same time, reimbursements are getting tighter, eligibility verifications more complicated, and your once-predictable payer mix is in freefall.

Welcome to the new healthcare landscape under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—a sweeping piece of legislation signed into law on July 4, 2025, with far-reaching implications for nearly every medical practice in the country.

In today’s episode of Medical Money Matters, we’re talking about what this bill actually does, how it will affect private practices, and what you—as a medical leader—can do now to position your practice for success.

If you lead a practice, run a medical group, or manage financial strategy in healthcare, this episode is essential listening.

  • Episode 141: The Summer Doldrums: Making the Most of Slower Clinic Schedules
    Aug 5 2025

    Send us a text

It’s early August. Your waiting room is half-empty. The phones are unusually quiet. And your front desk staff is asking the question you’ve heard every summer: “Is it always this slow?”

    Welcome to the summer doldrums.

If you’ve led or worked in a clinic for any length of time, you know what I’m talking about. The summer months, particularly June through August, often bring a natural lull in patient volume—especially in outpatient settings like primary care, pediatrics, dermatology, and behavioral health.

But what if I told you that this lull isn’t just something to endure—but a strategic opportunity to plan, recalibrate, and even grow?

In today’s episode of Medical Money Matters, we’re exploring how to make the most of slower summer clinic schedules. From measuring capacity to boosting seasonal services, supporting your team, and launching marketing campaigns, we’ll talk about how to turn a seasonal dip into long-term gains.
