  • Layers of Ugly Grit Produce the Beautiful Pearl with Kate Halfpenny
    Oct 9 2022

My guest today is someone who I consider to be an absolute rockstar, the incredible Kate Halfpenny. In this conversation, we talk about Kate’s successful career in journalism, the hardship she has faced both personally and professionally and how the challenges of life form the beautiful pearl.

Kate Halfpenny is the founder of Bad Mother Media, a boutique agency that creates the words to make businesses and entrepreneurs shine. As the former Executive Editor at WHO Magazine, Kate has interviewed almost every Australian celebrity and many international ones. She has written hundreds of cover stories and thousands of feature articles across the board.

An award winning journalist, editor and content creation expert, Kate is inspired by words, nostalgia, vodka cocktails and Dave Grohl. In this episode, we dive into Kate’s inspiring career journey and the many challenges which lead to a mental health decline that nearly derailed her. Kate talks about her surprise redundancy from WHO Magazine, which happened around the same time as her divorce, a melanoma discovery and a breast implant explosion that leaked into her lymph nodes.

We talk about where Kate found the fortitude to keep going, and her journey since then, making a sea change, starting a business by accident, and reaching the holy grail of journalism as a columnist.

Toward the end of the conversation, Kate talks about the things she does to fuel her mindset and maintain her sense of calm and she reminds us that in life, we have to experience the bad things to appreciate the good ones.

  • Breaking Up with Binge Drinking with Kathryn Elliott
    Oct 16 2022

With me today is Kathryn Elliott, the founder of The Alcohol Mindset Coach and My Breast Friend. In August 2019 at the age of 46, Kath discovered a large lump in her breast while getting dressed to race out the door to work. She instinctively knew something wasn’t right and two days later was diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer. She went through six months of gruelling chemo and is now, very pleasingly, cancer free.

As a former binge drinker for over 30 years, Kath is now passionate about building awareness about the deeper human connection you can achieve through sharing your experience of illness and trauma and how choosing to remain alcohol-free during this period was a catalyst to further healing and growth.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and also Ocsober, so our chat is perfectly timed!

In this episode, Kath shares how the binge drinking cycle kept her stuck in shame and blame, even while she was focused on healthy living in other parts of her life. She was what she refers to now, as a functioning binge drinker.

You don’t need to hit rock bottom or be labelled as an alcoholic to realise that alcohol is causing issues in your life. Kath shares what we need to look out for in our relationship with alcohol and the steps you can take to identify if you have a drinking issue.

Kath also underlines the importance of being aware of the health risks that alcohol presents. Alcohol consumption has been directly linked to breast cancer and she’s passionate about ensuring we have the information we need to make the best decisions for our health.

Kath’s work is so important in showing what is possible and finding a new way to live. Enjoy our conversation and I encourage you to share her message - it’s such an important one!

  • How to Optimise Your Pet's Health to Help Them Live Longer
    Nov 6 2022

I have a bit of a different podcast for you today! Anyone who owns a pet really loves them. The problem is, we can be loving them to death. The more educated we are on how to feed our pets well, the better.

Today I am joined by the co-founder of PetWell Ayda Hornak, who has a passion for natural health and wanted to provide the same for her dog Archie. PetWell provides all-natural treats and supplements that help in preventing and managing pet health issues.

Ayda shares what the catalyst was for founding PetWell, including her dog Archie’s liver issues following treatment for his anxiety and her own breast cancer diagnosis. Food is powerful and Ayda shares how PetWell’s supplements were developed to help with common issues our pets face including hip and joint, digestion and inflammatory issues.

In our conversation, Ayda reveals that, just like humans, gut health is key to ensuring healthy digestion and reduced inflammation for our pets. She shares the most common mistakes pet owners make and how we can turn those around to ensure optimal gut health.

Treats are a really important consideration for our pet’s optimal health. Ayda provides tips on how to ensure your treats are as beneficial as possible for your fur babies, including some great examples of what makes the perfect treat.

Ayda reminds us that our pets are with us for a short time, and we have a duty of care to look after them to ensure they live a long, healthy and pain-free life. Ayda’s work supports this and makes a huge difference in both pets’ and pet owners’ lives!

  • How to Make 2023 Your Game Changing Year
    Nov 27 2022

When I was diagnosed with cancer last year, I did a lot of reflection on how I was living my life, and what I needed to stop, start, change and continue to ensure I was living completely aligned with my values and doing things that give me joy and set my heart on fire.

But you certainly don’t need a life-threatening diagnosis to do this kind of reflection and make sure that you are aligned with that powerful vision you have for your life. The end and start of a year is an opportune time to do this. As we turn our thoughts to next year, I share some juicy insights on how to make it a game-changing year for you.

If you are going to make 2023 a game-changing year, you need to lead it, you need to own it and you need to be in control and not allow what’s going on in the world to control you.

Now is the time to get really curious and dig deep so that you can launch into 2023 with confidence and clarity. Doing this is incredibly motivating and creates enormous momentum.

I equip you with eleven points to work through, professionally and personally:

    1. How to keep an inspired mindset
    2. Emotional and behavioural flexibility
    3. How to stay anchored
    4. Refine your key message
    5. Determine your boundaries
    6. Look after you
    7. Make time for what gives you joy and makes your heart sing
    8. Identify what needs to change
    9. Cut out bad habits
    10. What do you need to say yes to?
    11. What and who do you need to say no to?

Carving out time to work through these eleven steps will provide you with a superb blueprint for a game-changing year in 2023. The more you put in, the more you put out. I have every belief in you.

Finally, I let you into a little secret! I have something new coming for you on the 4th of January 2023. I want to send you off with a huge heartfelt thanks for tuning in this year. I wish you and your family a wonderful festive season filled with love, joy and connection. Keep making it count and keep making a difference.
