Lamar Reviews - "Tulsa King" (Airdate 11/18/2022) If you listen to my reviews you know that I’m a Stallone Fan. I’m talking about an unadulterated, unapologetic, watch everything he’s in fan. I will admit, the idea of a TV series starring Sylvester Stallone, never occurred to me. Turns out, just like always, Sly, he lets me call him that, has not let me down! Stallone plays mobster Dwight Mangredi, who served 25 years in prison for a murder his boss committed. He wrongfully assumed that keeping his mouth shut for those 25 years would earn him a huge welcome home, a suitcase full of cash, and a promotion in the mob. Instead they ship him off to Tulsa Oklahoma and say this is your territory, have at it. Of course, after 25 years in prison he finds that the outside world has changed. Evidently, he was in solitary confinement, with no TV, no newspaper, no contact with outside world, because he has no idea what Uber is, and has no inkling about Marijuana dispensaries being legal, and how they work. I’m sure it is less about his understanding, as it about how funny it is when his “Old Gangster” persona has to react to it. And it is very funny. When he figures out how the marijuana thing works Mangredi offers the owner protection. The owner makes the obvious observation that the only thing he needs protection from is Mangredi. Mangredi just shrugs, and takes his cut. Stallone does a great job with this character and gives him many layers. One moment in the middle of beating the crap out of someone he will come up with a quote or reference to an ancient Greek Scholar, followed by the explanation that he “read a lot of books”. The next moment he is being a gentleman and giving his coat to a woman having a chill. He can switch from a Teddy Bear to bloodthirsty hooligan in the blink of an eye. I can’t speak for the next episode but this one caught my attention. The show is on Paramount Plus, the first season is 10 episodes that are 40 minutes long, and it’s Rated TV-MA with a lot of rough language, some violence, lot of drugs. This is another show created by Taylor Sheridan who, in case don’t know, is responsible for Yellowstone, it’s off shoot 1883, The Mayor of Kingstown, which is a really awesome show starring Jeremy Renner, and many other movies and series. Right now, Sheridan is the hottest thing going. Yellowstone has just started it's 5th season, and is going strong. Whether or not Stallone can get multiple seasons out of Tulsa King remains to be seen. I think it is very possible because, Taylor Sheridan has proven himself a writer capable of putting words to paper, that in the right hands, can become a hit. And Sylvester Stallone, not matter what you personally think about him, is a man that has done more with the talent he has, than anyone ever gave him credit for. Given the right storyline and dialog, I believe he can deliver a performance that will guarantee multiple seasons. Stallone is like his greatest character Rocky, you can knock him down, but you can’t knock him out! My Score: 4 Ice Cold King of Beers for the King of Tulsa! Learn more about your ad choices.
