In Your Mirror: extraordinary people you should know share their inspirational stories of overcoming life's obstacles

By: Neal Veglio
  • Summary

  • Each episode, I'll be chatting with extraordinary people who are enjoying success in their field, and saying to them, "let's take a look in your mirror". Each of us has our own story of overcoming adversity. Getting past those obstacles. Leaving the past behind us. In this show, you'll hear how some of the most successful and extraordinary household names of now and the future have overcome their demons to win big in life. Everyone has a story of how they've looked in their mirror, and then looked back at their past life from the rear view mirror. My hope is that you listen to these stories, and then feel inspired in some way to model yourself on these guests. After all, they ARE extraordinary people. Eventually, maybe you, too, can feel inspired to look back at your past life in your rear view mirror.

  • Handling sudden fame and enjoying the thrill of "The Chase": there's more to Darragh Ennis than "The Menace". Darragh talks quizzing, fandom and Bradley Walsh.
    May 10 2021

If you're someone who likes TV quizzes, you'll know there were two major events that happened last year.

One, was ITV's reenactment of the "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" cheating scandal centering around Major Charles Ingram.

The other, was the addition of a new 'chaser'.

Darragh Ennis isn't just any new cast member, though.

His appointment has a very interesting story behind it.

Darragh has loved quizzes for a long time.

During this episode you'll hear the exclusive story of the previous television appearance that he made.

Yes, I've exercised some detective skills, and found some very rare hidden footage of Darragh Ennis in action before The Chase was even on his radar!

You'll also learn all about Darragh's 'mirror moment'.

Darragh gives us his views on the passion people have for TV quizzes.

He shares with us how he makes his living when he's not on TV and talks about his number one passion - his study of insects at Ilan Davis.

He enlightens us on how he's handled fame.

He also gives us his very honest take on how he's using Twitter.

Darragh Ennis appears on "In Your Mirror" with the kind permission of ITV. Catch previous episodes of "The Chase" via the ITV hub.

Audio clips from "The Chase" used under the 'fair use' policy.

  • Overcoming sexism, bullying and online trolling: Absolute Radio's Sarah Champion wants the message to "be better" heard loud and clear.
    May 3 2021

The job of a radio presenter probably seems to the outside world to be one of the most glamorous jobs you could have.

The perception has always been that people working in radio are always hanging out with rock stars and celebrities, and getting free meals and champagne sent to their table.

However, the truth probably couldn't be more opposite.

Absolute Radio star Sarah Champion has been in the business for quite a while, having started in local radio in her early twenties, and working her way up to national radio through hard work, and consistent performance.

She's now the face and voice of Absolute Radio's annual summer festival coverage. If you're a listener during those months, you'll hear her chatting with the likes of Nik Kershaw and Noel Gallagher.

She also has a very popular social media following and can often be seen posting adorable content on Instagram involving her cherished border terriers.

She's also been known to cut the odd rug on Twitter.

She's one of the chosen few in a very competitive industry.

If you make it into a radio brand's inner sanctum, you can probably look forward to some of the longest hours, the lowest pay and the worst possible kind of treatment.

If you don't make it on the content boss's radar, you can look forward to being shoved on a desk to do admin work and perhaps maybe given the task of reading the news or travel bulletins once an hour, as an 'opportunity'.

At one time, it wasn't that ridiculous to learn that one of the regulars on your favourite morning show was actually on work experience, such was the exploitative nature of the radio business.

Despite knowing Absolute Radio's Sarah Champion for a long time, this is my first time ever recording audio content with her.

When I came up with the idea of "In Your Mirror" which is a podcast all about telling inspirational stories of people overcoming obstacles, I knew Sarah had to be one of my very first guests.

As you will hear from the conversation, Sarah has a lot to say about the way women in the media are treated.

Not just by their own bosses, but the wider general public.

With any luck, if you, or someone you know, is going through some similarly awful treatment, this episode may hopefully inspire you to feel empowered to call it out, just as Sarah has.
