On July 11th 2014, Dashcon (day one) began. In a convention center in a suburb of Chicago, hundreds gathered to celebrate their favorite fandoms - many of which were too small to support their own conventions. Fans of Sherlock, Dr. Who, Welcome to Nightvale and more were excited to bond with their peers and fellow enthusiasts for the first time. Little did they know that by 9PM that first night they would be corralled into the main hall and told if they did not collectively come up with $17,000: the convention was shut down. As the shiny veneer of good intentions began to evaporate, and the reality of poor planning and corrupt organizers began to darken the mood: there was a single hope to save the weekend for everyone… an hour in the ball pit.
