  • GEMMA ARROWSMITH
    Oct 31 2024

Comedy writer and actor Gemma Arrowsmith (The Tracey Ullman Show, The Now Show, Doctor Who) joins Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears to talk about all things telly from the 80s to the present day. We cover the differences between the TV and live versions of Bottom and why you shouldn't have taken a 10 year old to see the latter. We also cover Ghostwatch, TV telethons, the increasingly baffling finales of kids TV dramas as well as the world's most frustrating computer game.

You can find Gemma Arrowsmith at her website, on X, or check out her TV history themed Substack, Idiot Box. Her BBC Radio 4 sketch show Gemma Arrowsmith's Sketched Out is all here too. Great.

If you're a fan of Ghostwatch, do check out our episode all about June 1977 in which we cover "Alternative Three", a Ghostwatch-esque Science Report special about a secret base on Mars which, similarly, spooked some more gullible viewers! And if you're a fan of Bottom or Rik Mayall, Gareth made a BBC Radio 4 documentary all about the man himself, which is still available here.

  • October 1996 with ELEANOR MORTON! (Live from Aberystwyth Comedy Festival)
    Oct 29 2024

Coming to you, once again, from Aberystwyth Comedy Festival 2024, this is a live recording with a special guest - stand-up and social media star, Eleanor Morton.

Eleanor's appearence is being split across two episodes - and this is part two. Don't worry, it's completely stand-alone so feel free to start here as Gareth Gwynn presents Eleanor and Esyllt Sears with his research into October 1996. We've got a deep-dive (too deep, if anything) into Granada Men and Motors and a specially Scottish story for Eleanor (who is Scottish and not just a big fan of the country/concept).

So... Links, eh? Well look, the Men&Motors webpage is here and the big catalogue of everything is here and that's enough to be getting on with but you can work it out. Have a click around. See what you can find. Enjoy yourself.

Check out Eleanor online on X, Instagram and YouTube - and make sure you spin back a few episodes to find her other appearence as we cover October 2007, Keeping Up With The Kardashians and her "Xennial Dome" choice.

  • ANU VAIDYANATHAN
    Oct 24 2024

Engineer, athlete, author, filmmaker, entrepreneur and comedian Anu Vaidyanathan joins Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears for a chat about cultural phenomena from the 1970s to the present day. Growing-up in India, we discuss her earliest memories, her tech-savvy family and her move to the USA - before the conversation, like her life, takes a left-turn into discussing the difference between an Ironman and Ultraman Trialthlon - and some of the characters she met along the way, while persuing both! We also discuss Clown School and Catholic School. Y'know, the two types of school.

Follow Anu on Instagram and X.

The edition of Kiri's Comedy Club about stand-up in a second language, featuring Anu and Esyllt is here.

  • October 2007 with ELEANOR MORTON! (Live from Aberystwyth Comedy Festival)
    Oct 20 2024

Coming to you from Aberystwyth Comedy Festival 2024, this is a live recording with a special guest - stand-up and social media star, Eleanor Morton.

Eleanor's appearence is being split across two episodes, and in the first half Esyllt Sears is presenting Eleanor and Gareth Gwynn with her findings in-and-around October 2007. Keeping Up With The Kardashians had begun and some astronauts in space needed waking up. We also quiz Eleanor about her earliest memories and she picks and item for our regular feature, The Xennial Dome - selecting a significant TV show for the museum we're building dedicated to late 20th Century life.

Check out Eleanor online on X, Instagram and YouTube - and make sure you subscribe to the feed for another appearence later in the month as we turn our attention to October 1996.

  • GAV MURPHY - LIVE!
    Oct 16 2024

Podcaster, YouTuber, gamer and 90s naughty boy Gav Murphy joins Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears in the London Welsh Centre for a chat about cultural phenomena from the 1970s to the present day.

Gav talks us through what it was like to be on the cutting-edge of naughty-boy tech in the 1990s. We're prank calling people on payphones, we're hacking mobiles, and we're downloading all-sorts of muck on 56k modems - but don't get caught, or you're going "to the homes".

Follow Gav on Instagram and X and check-out his podcast Regular Features and his YouTube channel RKG.

This show was recorded under the old name (listen carefully and you can tell!) - So why not check-out some related episodes. Other people we got to play a round of Mario Kart on-stage include Sunil Patel (who also had a run-in with printed filth in the 90s, although this time not his fault!) and Ria Lina.

  • October 1990 (Keeping Up Appearances and the Reunification of Germany)
    Oct 14 2024

We've had some incongruous pairings of stories on this show before - but this one might take some beating. The sitcom Keeping Up Appearances launched and Esyllt Sears has a pretty comprehensive run-down of the facts behind the fun. This is coupled with a rattle through the post-Cold War reunification of Germany as seen through the eyes of Margaret Thatcher - and, as if to symbolize the coming together of two countries, this episode was actually recorded in two locations and later stitched together. See if you can spot the join.

  • ROSIE HOLT
    Oct 9 2024

Stand-up comedian and social media star Rosie Holt joins Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears in a sound proof booth just days after the general election had been called to discuss the news and cultural phenomena she remembers (or doesn't remember) from the 1970s to the present day. There's revelations, a deep-dive into a single episode of Live and Kicking and long-standing mysteries solved (but all with the sound on Gareth's laptop turned-off for rights reasons). We also cover the Olympics, the dome, what's it like pretending to be a Tory MP and how many blue jackets she owns - as well as the transferrable skills you can take into comedy from estate agency.

The obituary of Teletext hero Nick Fisher is here (although this one doesn't mention Teletext directly, it was him!)

For more Saturday morning kids TV chat, do make sure to check out our interview with Live and Kicking legends Trevor and Simon, from back in 2021, as they lift-the-lid on Going Live, Live and Kicking and early-90s tours.

Rosie Holt is on X and Instagram and TikTok and her topical podcast NonCensored is back for a brand new series, so check that out. Especially this episode featuring Esyllt Sears.
