    Dopo la battaglia della Marna, l'illusione di una guerra breve è svanita. I piani d'attacco sono falliti. La guerra di movimento si trasforma, nel corso dell'autunno del 1914, in guerra di posizione. Il sistema delle trincee, come una gigantesca cicatrice, attraversa l'Europa dal confine svizzero al Canale della Manica. La guerra divora uomini e materiali, e il prevalere della difesa sull'attacco crea una situazione di stallo. Scopriamo come provarono i generali dei due schieramenti a sbloccare lo stallo, addentrandoci nella storia delle terribili battaglie del 1915 e del 1916.

  • La Prima guerra mondiale: il maggio radioso

    Il 24 maggio 1915, dopo una neutralità durata più di 9 mesi, l'Italia entra in guerra. Fu un colpo di Stato? E fu un tradimento verso gli ex alleati della Triplice alleanza? E, soprattutto: l'Italia sarebbe potuta restare fuori dalla guerra? Proviamo a rispondere a queste domande, raccontando la storia dei personaggi che furono protagonisti di questo giorno cruciale della storia del nostro paese: politici, giornalisti, poeti, ambasciatori ma, soprattutto, centinaia di migliaia di cittadini che stavano per diventare soldati.

  • La Prima guerra mondiale: l'Italia in guerra

    La Grande guerra è iniziata. E l'Italia cosa fa? Per ora resta neutrale: è questa la decisione presa dal governo e comunicata ufficialmente il 3 agosto.
    Ma, mentre il conflitto si trasforma in guerra di posizione e minaccia di durare a lungo, in Italia nasce un dibattito su cosa sia meglio fare: restare neutrali? O piuttosto entrare in guerra? Nelle piazze si confrontano i neutralisti e gli interventisti, e intanto, nel segreto della diplomazia, il primo ministro e il ministro degli esteri iniziano a trattare con tutti e due gli schieramenti, nello spirito del "sacro egoismo". Nei primi mesi del 1915, l'Italia non ha ancora deciso. Ma l'ora decisiva si sta avvicinando.
