“I Had an Abortion”: What Abortion Activism Looks Like

  • Summary

  • The history of abortion in America is also the story of people of color: a struggle for independence, respect, and self-determination. In this episode of the Found Free podcast, I talk with Renee Bracey Sherman, a Black woman who had an abortion at 19 but didn’t see her own story reflected in the current abortion discussion. She’s on a mission to change that.

Renee begins by telling me about her abortion and how she felt shame and stigma around it from her family. She details her journey into activism and reproductive justice, describing what made her want to include people of color in the narrative around abortion. Listen out for our discussion about her upcoming book, Liberating Abortion, and what her research into the history of abortion taught her.

We finish off the episode by discussing how the overturning of Roe vs. Wade will change abortion provisions in the United States and what Sherman’s hopes for her book are. If you enjoyed this discussion on this key part of reproductive justice, please consider subscribing to the Found Free podcast and leaving me a review.
