How Many Weeks Is A Pregnancy?

By: Find Out How!
  • Summary

  • It is estimated that the pregnancy actually lasts 38 weeks, that is, the gestational age of the baby at birth is 38 weeks, which is the time elapsed from the fertilization of the egg to delivery.

The two extra weeks of pregnancy correspond to the 14 days that go from the first day of the last menstrual period until the moment of ovulation, when the ovum is ready to be fertilized. Therefore, another way to calculate the probable due date is to add 280 days or, what is the same, 40 weeks, to the first day of the last menstrual period.

It must be taken into account that, although the exact day of fertilization was known with absolute certainty, the calculation of the day of delivery is a mere assumption, because there are numerous factors that influence whether the delivery is early or delayed, and it is considered normal to occur between three weeks before and two after the probable date.

Only 50-60% of deliveries occur more or less on the date that was estimated likely, and 10% of women give birth before the 37th week.
