    Greatest Kiwi Of All Time: No. 69 - Peter Gordon (Down 13 from 69 last year)

    There have been plenty of Kiwi chefs who do well overseas, but none quite so well as Peter Gordon.  With establishments in Auckland, Istanbul and London and plenty of awards and honours under his belt - Gordon is definitely restaurant royalty.

    Peter Gordon fell in love with food in his teenage years, cooking always played a big role in the daily life of his whānau growing up in Whanganui.

    At 17, Gordon left university and went to Melbourne where he completed a four-year cookery apprenticeship at various restaurants.  He would travel around Asia and Indonesia which would inspire him to combine culinary cultures, a style which is now called “fusion”

    In 1986 he would head back to Wellington and open the first iteration of “The Sugar Club”.  He would run the restaurant for two years, before moving on to London.

    Gordon would work in restaurants in London, before branching out on his own once again and opening additional “Sugar Clubs”, in Notting Hill and West Soho.  In 2001, he opened The Providores and Tapa Room Restaurant on Marylebone High Street.  Providores would be a huge success, closing in 2019 just shy of its 18th anniversary.

    Gordon would appear as a “celebrity chef” on many British and New Zealand cooking shows.  He’s written eight books and is Air New Zealand’s consultant chef.  He’s opened several kiwi restaurants, most notably in the Sky City precinct - including Auckland’s own “Sugar Club” at the top of the Sky Tower.

    He has taken Kiwi cuisine around the world.  Peter Gordon, a legend of a chef, and one of Today FM’s Greatest Kiwis of All Time.
