Grandmaster Flash and the Furios Five were a hip hop group formed in the South Bronx of New York City in 1978. The group’s members were Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Kidd Creole, Keef Cowboy, Scorpio, and Rahiem.
I love the hip hop group because they know how to manipulate sounds and create new music using sound effects and beats with turntables and mixers. They have the scratch sounds. I love to hear their breakbeats where they use sample recordings from funk & R&B in their music. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five knows how to rap about the street life without misleading the audience to violence. They know how to move the crowd to dance and have a good time when they rhyme.
When I was growing up, the older folks would get on their young family members about rapping. They didn’t like it. They said it was all just noise.
But I learned something about music listening to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. I learned how to stand up and make a speech with confidence. Rap music had all that in there.
But a new generation came along in rap putting down women, and there was explicit lyrics and violence. Rap was a good thing, and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
Thank you Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five for making rap a good thing. Thank you for all the good times in rap music.
I’m Gail Nobles. Thank you for listening. Tune in again next time. ..
