Gen Z in NYC: Expressions of Faith

By: Mike Matthews
  • Summary

  • Beginning in 2005, Mike Matthews came to NYC to pursue his career in advertising. Shortly thereafter he was asked by his local church to be a volunteer youth leader, which introduced him to some of the most interesting and inspiring young adults across the five boroughs. Although Pew Research has dubbed members of Gen Z (born 1997-2012) "the least religious generation", Mike discovered they're often misunderstood in terms of their beliefs, approach to faith, and overall culture. In this podcast, Mike interviews different NYC youth who share their real, unscripted stories and expressions of faith. Email: mike@genznyc.com or IG: @genz_in_nyc

  • Coco & Betty: Faith and Friendship without Fear
    Oct 25 2020

Coco & Betty have been close friends since they met on a roller derby team in Brooklyn at the age of 12.

Although they were raised with dramatically different religious upbringings (Latter-day Saint, aka "Mormon" and Jewish respectively), they discuss how those differences actually elevated their friendship as they navigated the crazy world of junior high and high school.

And, at the end I’ll ask them both if, as open as they are, is there a difficult question they’ve always wanted to ask the other, but never have.
