One story that must be told is my own. I've been on a radical journey of defining + finding freedom over the last few years. One thing that I've come to realize is that freedom is a constant quest. As I evolve and swell in self-love + agency, so do my desires.

In this episode, I share some of the complexities of my own journey. I hope that you enjoy!

    Jun 5 2022

On this episode, I had the great privilege of interviewing published author, Kathy Murray. Like myself, Kathy is a Black woman who left the corporate world and embarked on an expat lifestyle solo. She chronicles her experiences in her novel, The Munich Cowboys Cheerleaders.

I really enjoyed unpacking the life of a trailblazer with extremely rich experiences, while also acknowledging that there are still so many adventures that she looks forward to. #FreeBlackGirlEnergy

Kathy Murray is a certified personal trainer with over thirty years’ experience in the fitness industry. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University where she was a member of the 1983 National Cheerleading Championship Team.

After college she competed in and won the United States Aerobic Championship in 1986 and spent the year traveling the world as a Fitness Ambassador and worked as a free-lance educator to teach fitness to European Instructors.

While in Munich, she coached the Munich Cowboys (American Football) Cheerleaders to six national titles in cheerleading and was head trainer/translator for the German Gladiators during a pilot TV show for the International Gladiators.

Always an avid cyclist, Kathy dipped her toe into the world of multi-sport in 2000, first competing in duathlons then eventually moving to triathlons. Kathy has owned her personal training business Fit Bodies for 25 years and in 2022 co-authored the Audible book, The Munich Cowboy Cheerleaders based on her time coaching the squad.

She lives in Atlanta with her husband Lutalo, dog Mingus and cat Sassy. Website | Instagram | LinkedIn | Facebook | YouTube | Twitter

I'm starting to think seriously about being a mother and this episode hit me so deeply. So deeply, I held it close to my chest for a month - walking with it + meditating on the nuggets that were shared. The experience of motherhood is so nuanced. I appreciated the beautifully raw stories shared by Liku and Jasmine. I'm forever grateful that these sisters WENT there with me.

As a bit of background, Liku was the woman who helped the notion of sisterhood at scale for me. Jasmine was the woman who first gave me the opportunity to help heal young teenage girls who had become jaded to the thought of sisterhood, as I once had.

It's beautiful to be reminded of how much I love what I do. My work is an extension of the air that I breathe. With this episode, I am reminded that I am leaving a mark for all who come behind. In America, it may be difficult for us to know where we came from... but my children will know that they they came from me. And knowing that... will be such a force.

My heart is always full after a warm conversation with my girl, Paquetia Goodwin (@livingliferatedpg). From unpacking the experiences of walking away from spaces of being "the only" to all the things we would tell our younger selves about the women they do not yet see - the episode is full of wisdom. Check it out.

    More about Paquetia:

Paquetia is an advocate for individual contributors, teaching them to create successful career and personal development strategies.

She's grown her career for the last 20+ years in IT. During that time, she recognized there were limited spaces where she felt valued or part of a community.

As a coach + mentor, Paquetia considers it a privilege to create safe spaces for professionals, specifically black women. She reminds them they don't have to be resilient to be successful.

Paquetia says, "Vulnerability, intelligence, beauty, and fear can all occupy the same space. Success is learning to navigate those experiences. I make sure they recognize they don't have to navigate them alone."

  • #16: Nostalgia, Songs + Poetry
    Feb 19 2022

This episode is food for the soul. Every ounce of it. You'll holler, you'll cry, you'll clap... but most importantly - you will find freedom.

It's always straight energy when I connect with creatives. Enjoy some singing from me + some poetry being dropped from Zulmie. We connect in our shared stories about divorce, losing ourselves in our relationships with others, and finally understanding where the source of contentment really is. Enjoy.

    Zulmie's Bio:

My name is Marie Zulmie Lorminey. I was born in Brooklyn, New York to two Haitian parents. I grew up in Uniondale, New York. I attended Elementary, Middle School, and High School in Uniondale. I left New York and completed my undergraduate degree at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in History Liberal Arts. I completed my graduate studies at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia with a Master’s in Practical Theology. Writing has always been a creative and therapeutic outlet for me. I started writing poetry in middle school and share my poetry with the world for the first time an open mic in Norfolk, VA during my college years. I left poetry shortly after college. I would occasionally write and only share with my family and friends, no open mic. I reconnected with poetry while making the decision to take the self-love journey and go through with a divorce. Poetry saved, healed, transformed, and sustained me. Today I am the published Author/Poet of “Rotten Soup” and book of Poetry. I am currently located in Lawrenceville, Georgia. I am an Educator professionally and a Poet/Published Author passionately. I conduct Poetry workshops as a way to improve social-emotional learning and wellness, improve literacy skills, and as a way of introduction to writing therapy. I also have an IG Live show, Zulmie’s Poetic Family and Friends.
