Estate Planning Essentials with Rod Hatley

  • Summary

  • Rod Hatley, a former JAG officer, found his calling as an estate planning attorney after he and his sister experienced an expensive and time consuming seven-year probate for his fathers’ estate. When Rod’s father fell ill, Rod tried to get his father to do the estate planning he needed. Unfortunately, his father had a mental block and could not bear the thought of gifting or changing legal title to the assets he spent his life accumulating. In 1995, based on his experience with his father, Rod turned to estate planning so he can help others with the family conversations and the planning that needs to take place to avoid estate taxes and the costs and delays of probate.

Here is what to expect on this week’s show:

    • Disaster stories that show what happens when a person doesn’t plan.
    • Basic Essential Estate Planning documents, explained simply.
    • The responsibilities of your agents, and how to appoint the right person to unwind your estate and help you if you are incapacitated.
    • What happens in Probate Court, and how planning can help you avoid it.
    • How to talk to your children and loved ones about estate planning issues.
