Episode 24 - Lifting the Lid on Death with Roger Byard

  • Summary

  • As one of the world’s foremost forensic pathologists, Professor Roger Byard is a man who has given his life to death. In his 40 years at the coalface of mortality, there’s not much he hasn’t seen…serial killers, cot deaths, the 2002 Bali bombings, the 2004 southeast Asian tsunami. In this episode of Psycho Schizo Espresso, he joins Bruce and @TheRealDrKev to reflect on his journey through death that began over 4000 autopsies ago! As you can imagine, the conversation is wide-ranging and takes in the tragic, the creepy, the ridiculous, and sometimes, the mysterious and (as yet) still unexplained, as Roger gives us a guided tour around death stopping off at sexual asphyxiation, death by animal, death by selfie, and death through sorcery and ritual magic. Among other questions, Kev & Bruce ask: How lifelike are those shows about forensic pathologists that we see on TV? And, er, rather worryingly: “Is there really such a thing as the ‘perfect murder’?” But they start, quite literally, with a ‘bang’ and something that has fascinated them both for years…the rather hot topic of spontaneous human combustion!
