We're excited to bring you the second half of our Barbenheimer series! In this episode, we're tackling another movie that took the world by storm last summer: 'Barbie' (2023). Director Greta Gerwig helms this funny and surprisingly introspective film about the doll that was a hot pink sensation during Jessica and Gabi's childhoods. With Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the roles of Stereotypical Barbie and Beach Ken, the audience takes a nostalgic ride through Barbieland, where everything is perfect. Or is it?
We'd probably need several episodes to get through all of the themes that this movie brought up for us, but we do manage to dig into some big ones. We talk about balance as something we constantly pursue, rather than as a destination where we land. We explore the idea of tension between the world that is and what it "should" be. We examine power in its different forms, and what it means to really effect change. We also go into what we think this movie got wrong, where it went too far, and where it didn't go far enough.
Thanks for listening! We'd be so grateful if you could leave us a review wherever you listen to podcasts.
