Episode 2: An Update with the Hispanic Latino Student Association, and Paying Tribute to the Boxcar People

  • Summary

  • On this episode, we visit with Jenny Felix, Gigi Ayala, and Jesus Tovar, all current members or advisors to the Hispanic-Latino Student Association. Members of HLSA discuss activities during #HispanicHeritageMonth which runs from September 15 through October 15, but say while the calendar celebration may be coming to an end, the celebration can and should continue 24/7. We also pay homage to the "Boxcar People," which (via WTVP.org) "Boxcar People tells the story of Mexican workers recruited in the early 1900s to work the railroads in Galesburg, Illinois. It is a truly inspiring tale of immigrants rising up against all odds in a rarely heard story of how the Midwest’s Mexican population helped build this country but still struggle for acceptance and civil rights." These individuals and families were also acknowledged during the October 3, 2022, Galesburg City Council meeting where a proclamation was read celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. An excerpt from that reading is also included in this episode.
