  • 【寺子屋】は、菅丞相が左遷される直前に筆法（ひっぽう）の奥義を伝授されていた武部源蔵（たけべげんぞう）夫婦が営んでいる学習塾が舞台です。源蔵夫婦は、不義によって勘当されていましたが、菅丞相の嫡男（ちゃくなん）菅秀才（かんしゅうさい）を密かに預かっていました。そこに、松王丸をはじめとるする、時平の家来達が菅秀才の首を差し出せと押しかけます。そこで、主君に恩ある源蔵は、「せまじきものは宮仕え」と吐露しながら、今日出会ったばかりの気量の良い子供の首を替りに差し出します。源蔵夫婦は窮地を脱すると、その後松王丸が再び現れ、身替りに差し出された子供は自分の子供だと本心を明かすのでした。

    『寺子屋』は、主君への忠義を果たそうとする、子を失った親、兄弟、親への想い、夫婦の悲痛な心理が描かれます。全5段の内で四段目の切にあたり、上演回数も多く有名な場面です。
