Cardiothoracic Surgery in Kenya, East Africa

  • Summary

  • This is a special episode as I feature Dr. Keith Dindi who is a pioneer, a champion and just a truly inspiring Cardiothoracic surgeon who decided to stay in his home country of Kenya to provide life saving cardiac surgeries! Dr. Dindi speaks about his up-bringing and his journey from a small village in the western part of Kenya near the Ugandan border to his fellowship training in Australia.  He also discusses the current state of Cardiothoracic surgery including the effect of Rheumatic heart disease and the shortage of CT surgeons in Kenya.

Rheumatic heart disease is a condition in which the heart valves have been permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. The heart valve damage may start shortly after untreated or under-treated streptococcal infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. An immune response causes an inflammatory condition in the body which can result in on-going valve damage.
